Note from the Director:
L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908 and was an instant best seller - selling more than 19,000 copies in its first 5 months. I, however, fell in love with the Canadian landscapes and endearing characters in Kevin Sullivan’s miniseries of 1985, broadcast on PBS in the US a year later. After my enthusiastic interest, my mother read it aloud to my sister and me, and I can still recall the very distinct way she said “Cuthbert”. I suspect many of you, like me, have fond memories of this story and its memorable events and characters and relish any opportunity to reacquaint yourself with them. Welcome.
It’s been my joy to share this story of love, friendship, high falutin mumbo-jumbo and the treasure of home with these students, many of whom were, until now, unfamiliar with the story. I had a lot to learn, as this is my first show as director for Pella High School, and I am endlessly thankful to Suzi Jones, Ashlee Whittington, and Dameon Place for helping me learn the ropes. The cast and crew have been full of grace for my learning curve and have worked hard and long hours on every aspect of this show, amidst a very busy fall.
Thank you for coming to the show and supporting live theatre. It’s such a special way to spend an afternoon or evening together. So sit back and enjoy the show. But first, tell me, which would you choose to be: divinely beautiful, dazzlingly clever, or angelically good?
