Something Rotten - March 12 - March 14, 2026

Colonial Players

 From the Director

Welcome to the Colonial Players’ 50th musical, Something Rotten! I’m excited to celebrate half a century of musical theater at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School with a show that is, quite literally, all about musicals. This production has been a joy to direct, filled with nods to classics like Rent, Evita, Annie, Les Misérables, and many more. As we’ve worked through the process, the staff and I have enjoyed reminiscing about past shows and the wonderful memories they hold.

The Colonial Players trace their roots to the 1960s, when PW had an active theater group performing plays and occasional musicals. In 1977, choral director Robert Reilly and his wife Gail mounted the first official musical under the Colonial Players banner, beginning a tradition that continues today. Bob was my high school director, and from him I learned dedication, attention to detail, and the importance of high expectations. Bob and Gail led the group until 1993, when Amy LaRue took over. During her tenure, she wore nearly every hat including director, music director, pit conductor, and pianist. I worked with Amy as an assistant director and sound designer, learning how to manage a production, collaborate with a team, and plan effective blocking.

In 2003, I was honored to be named the director of Footloose, and the following year I took over as head of the CP musical theater program. It remains a privilege to carry on the legacy of the Colonial Players and to help inspire the next generation of artists and technicians.

Something Rotten has been an absolute pleasure to produce. Our staff has been as creative and dedicated as ever, all working to provide students with the best experiences possible. I’m thrilled to welcome back Lindsey Fagan (2010) as Costume Designer and to extend a warm welcome to our new Lighting Designer, Elizabeth Amstutz. As always, thank you to Maria, Rebekah, Val (1997), Jordan (2006), Melissa (1994), Cooper (2015), Chris, Kevin, and Jen for helping create a memorable, supportive, and safe environment for our students. It means the world to give back to a program that has given me so much.

Seniors - thank you for your talent, leadership, and commitment. We wish you the very best in your future endeavors. Enjoy these final performances, and remember: you will always have a home with CP.

A heartfelt thank you to the Colonial School District for its continued support of the arts, especially Dr. Bacani, Dr. Christian, the School Board, PW administration, and the many behind-the-scenes staff members who make it possible for our students to shine. Your support brings productions like Something Rotten to life.

Finally, thank you to my family - Carrie, Luke, Lance and Bryce - who continue to support me and the crazy hours involved in putting together a production.  I appreciate their understanding, their sacrifices, and the love that keeps me going show after show.

Enjoy the show!
