Notes from the Director:
Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I am incredibly proud of our production of this timeless classic. For some of our older (but not that old!) audience members, you may remember watching Dorothy and her friends once a year with your family. As a mom, I made sure my own children experienced this memorable film that has truly withstood the test of time. It’s fascinating that even in an age of green screens and remarkable special effects, the Wicked Witch and her Winged Monkeys can still be frightening!
While researching for this show, I discovered many new and interesting facts about the original movie. Did you know that:
-
The iconic ruby slippers were actually silver in the original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? They were changed to ruby to take advantage of Technicolor film.
-
The horse in Emerald City was covered in colored gelatin powder to change colors on screen!
-
The famous line “There’s no place like home” wasn’t in the original book—it was created for the movie.
-
The actors playing the Tin Man and Scarecrow had to spend hours each day in makeup and costume.
One reason this story remains so timeless is its powerful themes. These include the idea that there really is no place like home; that often what we seek—like the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion—we already possess within ourselves; that those in power, like the Wizard, may not always be what they seem; and that while there is great friendship and joy in our world, there is also true evil.
We hope you enjoy the show, and thank you for coming to support us!
