Welcome to 67 Cinderellas – the second
and final production in our
2025–2026 WMS Theatre season.
When most of us hear the name Cinderella, we picture a single glass slipper, a fairy godmother, and one magical night at the ball. But playwright Stacey Lane reinterprets this classic tale as a delightfully imaginative and chaotic story, playfully challenging fairytale notions of romance and what defines a princess.
Early in our rehearsal process, we explored Cinderella stories from cultures around the world. As actors and crew members brought to life versions from West Africa, Korea, Iraq, China, Greece, and beyond, they began to notice both the shared threads and the unique perspectives within each telling. In the same way that 67 Cinderellas challenges the familiar 17th-century French classic, our actors were encouraged to create characters that question and expand beyond familiar prince-and-princess tropes—and they more than rose to the occasion.
This company has embraced the demands of this piece with creativity, humor, and a deep spirit of collaboration. With so many characters sharing the spotlight, this production depends on true ensemble work: listening to each other, supporting one another, and building a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. I have been especially inspired by the sense of creative ownership this company has taken over this production. Hardly a rehearsal passed without an actor approaching me suggesting “So, I was thinking that at this moment my character might…” or a student leader asking “Would it be ok if we tried [this] instead the next time we run this scene?” Their willingness to take risks, to trust their instincts, and to shape this story together has been both exciting and deeply moving to witness.
Thank you for supporting live theatre. Enjoy the show!
